Often, I have heard many people make statements about the church of God and why they are or are not part of it. I get very surprised as people give very seemingly logical reasons as to why they do not go to church or commit to one. ( Very soon I would put a post about some of those reasons and answer them straight up). But first, we would begin to examine what God’s word says about it and find answers to questions on our hearts.
By believing in the gospel of Jesus, every believer is a part of the Church of Jesus Christ. We belong to the body and He is the head. Look at this:
Eph 1:22-23 (KJV)
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
1 Cor 12:11-13
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
What then is the meaning of the church gan gan? I know some blessed folks mix things up, bless their hearts, and just think that the church is a structure. Well, that might be okay for geographical location purposes.
However, there is more!
The church is the gathering of believers.
To put it simply, the church is first spiritual and everyone that is born again is a member of the church of Jesus, automatically. Notice in 1 Cor. 12: 13, we see that we have all been baptized into the same body by the Spirit of our God.
Now, this means that the church is not a denomination or sect. It is simply the gathering of those who have been washed, bought and sanctified by the blood of Jesus.
Can I hear a shout??
However, you live out that spiritual reality in a physical gathering of believers, known as the church also!
So, as a member of the spiritual body of Christ, the church, you now participate in that spiritual body by participating in the physical gathering of believers.. Do you understand?
That is why the letters of Paul were written to churches that had locations in the physical, even though they are spiritual..
This is also why you cannot ‘have a church at home’ or fellowship with God in isolation.
Yes..which leads us to the first reason :
1. God commands it
24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
The gathering of the believers here was physical. Of course you would agree with me that the members of the church could not be gathering together in the spirit right? They had to see each other to be exhorted… to be edified.. So, God commands it. As a matter of fact, the church in Corinth was addressed by Paul:
1 Cor 14:23
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
1 Cor 14:26
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
Notice the fact that they gather? So we see in God’s word that the church is supposed to gather.
Right from the day of Pentecost, they have always been gathering and till the day of His second coming, we shall still be gathering!!
(Now, that sounded like a sweet line!)
Whether the gathering is on a Sunday, a Saturday or any other day, we must gather oo…. Every time the believers meet, you should be there, not just ‘Sunday, Sunday!’.. come on! God has more in store for you everytime you fellowship with the believers, I mean,
Every God-Blessed time!
So, brother, sister, we must gather this gathering oo.. There is no gathering alone in your room! God’s word instructs it!
2. The Church is for Growth:
Show me a believer who is not serious with his walk with God and service, he is most likely a freelancer believer.. Just floating without an anchor. The design of God is such that the church is the place of growth for the believer. It is where the believer is taught God’s word and exposed more to the things of God. Even though, it does not stop at the gathering, the gathering is the primary place of God reaching out to the believer through His servants. This is one of the reasons why we must encourage God’s word taking pre-eminence in all of our services. The Bible refers to the church as the pillar of truth..
1 Tim 3:15
15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
The church has always been a place of teaching and growing
2 Tim 4:2
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2 Tim 2:2
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
3. The Church is for Accountability:
You see, one of the things that being committed in a church would do to you is establish a rule over your life. People have been placed by the Father in positions to make you accountable for your walk with God and your decisions and I can assure you that this would greatly help your growth and progress with him. I think now, I should address some very ill-conceived notions by some people. I have heard some people say that,
‘This person goes to church but he still does this and that.. she is still doing this and that…’
‘Church folks are hypocrites..yen yen yen!’ and all sorts of statements that help nobody…
The prostitute that comes to the church has a higher chance of hearing the truth one day, some day and changing her ways than the one who doesn’t!
The drunkard that still comes to church also has a higher chance of encountering the word that would transform his life than the one that does not!
If you choose to stay away because of him or her, brother, you would be shocked! We that are in church are praying for that brother, he would change! And guess what, you would still remain where you are!!!
I have seen this happen time and time again. Folks whose lives had no direction or meaning, or purpose, encountered by God, even though it took some time, but then, God never gives up on anybody! Never! And as His children, we also Never, ever give up on anyone!
So, if you belong to that category, please, renew your mind and change your thinking. We never encourage acts of lasciviousness or immorality in the church, however, we as believers, would never say that we have no part in church because of someone else’s actions. It shows a lack of depth in the things of God anyways, because as believer, you should understand that the church is a family and everyone grows at a different pace. Some people might not understand a bible truth for years and still be going to church! All of a sudden, one day, their hearts are receptive to the word and they get it!
And finally on this point, you would not tell God when we get to heaven that you were not committed to His work because of your friend’s actions…
Shey o make sense?
I ask again, is it sweet in your mouth?
Did your friends put a rope around your neck? Las las, you are responsible for your actions, so bro, sis, wise up!!!
4. The Church is for Ministry:
The church is where we are trained for ministry. The church is where we are taught how to witness, how to go about teaching the gospel. We are equipped in the church! The gathering of the believers is mostly where you see the four or five fold ministry in operation! The church is where you see those gifts, the church is where you get schooled in God’s word. I would a write a separate post on this very soon, but you see, the church is for ministry.
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
5. The Church is for Influence and Associations:
As my Father in the Lord would always say, we are all products of influences. There is no one that cannot be influenced. I hear people say they are beyond influence and I just laugh sometimes. Even if you do not have any friends (which is not normal) I just have to pick your phone and laptop, and check what influences you most right there.. Your ideologies and thought patterns did not come down from heaven.. You saw, read, heard or felt them through a means. You have been influenced.. Jesus was wise and all knowing when he asked the father to keep us in the world. But he asked that we be one. The church helps you to build the right associations and connections. In the light. The church helps you to stand among like minds.. See what the Psalmist said in Psalm 1,
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
It therefore means that your company is very very important and God intends that the church influences you rightly and sets a pattern, a mindset for all that you do.
The company of believers is the best company to work and walk… and the best part is that we never retrench workers!
Please tell me you got that?
6. The Church is to go through life with you:
A believer is not supposed to be lonely! You belong to a family! A family of God’s live and God’s people and so you have every reason to belong. Look at what Paul said,
15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
It therefore means that when you down, you gat people to share with. When you weak mehn, you gat people there, when you happy, you gat people there too, for every stage and season of your life, there is always God’s family there for you.
7. You are a part of the family and you have your role!
God made all of us special with different abilities and gifts. The church is a place where we get to use all of these to serve the father. As we already saw at the beginning of this article, you are a part of the church, so why not get up and just function as you already have been made to function?
1 Cor 12:27
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
O wa very simple. Walk as a son, as a family member!
This family is not perfect, because it involves humans, but this family is God’s family and that is all it needs to be!
On a final note, commitment is not just by attending services on Sundays and going home. It involves being involved. Join a unit! Join a team that suits you well! There is always one for you! Be committed! I say again:
The template you form for your life now would be most likely what you would run with throughout your life!
So please, get a local church and start enjoying the goodness of the father and His family!
Have a blessed week!
